In the early 20th century, although still relatively isolated, the South African
artistic community grew to include a variety of different influences. While the
naturalistic was still present, and the ‘softer’ impressionist influence remained
strong, new particularly modern styles developed. Much art was therefore characterised
by the aesthetic experimentation of the early 20th century, European Avant-garde
– particularly Expressionism - and exemplified by a bold arbitrariness of colour
and distortions of form.
